Conversations on Weight Loss

Currently fighting the flab here in Fancy Paper Land, went for lunch and heard this gem that made me question everything I am doing.

(Side Note: I am ferocious for listening in on chats in coffee shops. Don’t judge.)

Lady at lunch with colleagues in local cafΓ©:

Marsha has lost tons of weight recently…she looks great!

You wouldn’t recognise her at all. She looks weird, totally different.

She’s been doing exams and just, like, can’t eat at all.

She’s wrecked a bit.

Yeah- she can’t really sleep either.

It’s the exams, y’know.

Tons of weight. Just falling off though.

Actually, she started eating meat again and everything, just mad stressed.

Oh yea, and one of her teeth fell out.

And that is what’s wrong with the world.

  1. Hahaha, so it’s the balance of energy in and energy out? I should be stressing about exams and eating more meat. Haven’t that many teeth too lose now, perhaps I might have to rethink that reasoning.

Cheers for a laugh on the first day of winter!

  2. It’s crazy isn’t, we’d rather be thin than healthy. When my sister had an overactive thyroid, people would actually say to her, “I wish I had that!” We are a crazy species. That said, I’m trying to lose weight too, because I know I’m not healthy at the weight I am. Ah, life.

    1. That is ridiculous. I have a friend with the same condition and it can cause all kinds of problems. So we would like more medical issues as long as we were skinny …..πŸ€” I am not healthy either. Life is MEAN!

  3. That’s me – now. On a diet, not eating meat. I’ve been on it properly for two days and whilst not actually hungry, I am obsessing somewhat. I may also be a smidgeon ratty

  4. The whole lose weight and gain weight is hard. I weigh about 9 stone ish.. BMI 20kgm2.. or i was, till i was ill on Wednesday and didn’t eat all day. I now weigh 8 stone 11, BMI now 19 something.. still healthy but now working to regain it.. Yes I can eat what I want, but I can only eat so much. Those wanting to lose weight, watching your portions, watching your snacks, increasing your veg, watching how you cook, t’s all hard work.

I wonder what the lady they were talking about weighed before she lost weight. She sounds exhausted to be losing teeth.. Yes it’s all hard work.. stress is not good!

    1. Teeth loss sounds just insane to me. The speaker was so focused on the weight loss she just couldn’t hear what she had said but her colleagues definitely did. It comes off fast when you are ill like that however doesn’t it.

  5. Ha! I feel ya! Everybody I know loses a few pounds over spring and summer except me. All the parties kill my diet. But I’m not about to avoid all the parties, so I’m not quite ready for that bathing suit yet! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

  6. Oh my goodness, poor lady!

One of my friends used to live in India. One of her friends (who was travelling back to visit family) was so desperate to lose weight that she licked the floor, in the hope of catching a parasite/ lose weight. She got her wish, she became super sick for a couple of years(!) My friend was shocked that she’d felt she needed to lick the floor…but then was also pretty shocked that this girl would admit to doing something so stupid!

It’s all sad and funny at the same time!!

  7. Erm can I lose weight and keep my teeth please??

I love listening in to conversations too!

We were in a pub the other day and it was the best!
One couple arguing over really dumb stuff, then girlfriend and her welsh speaking boyfriend and his dad – they spent the whole time talking in welsh and reminding her frequently that she couldn’t speak a word of welsh! And then the last couple who were arguing over the correct name for a cigarette lighter, she stormed off to google it… I never got to know what the correct term is for a lighter FOR GODS SAKE!!

  8. Haha!! This is such a funny conversation. The poor lady is stressed from whatever health problem she has and they are commenting on her weight loss as if that is a good thing. Why not worry about the underlying problem.

  9. I am a coffee shop goer so can relate to conversations to that go on. The tables are so close together and people are often brazen about what they talk about. I’m usually alone (lunch hour) so have paper and pen out jotting my to do list and listening to well everything!!

    1. Glad it is common! My husband cannot hear very well and is very jealous when I am engrossed in another table’s chat. I can’t repeat it to him either as I would have to be very loud so he can hear!

  10. Wow what a conversation! People are always ready to talk about someone else LOL! Anyway is good to stay on a healthy lifestyle I personally follow a plant based diet and I love it! I feel great but I also walk daily and workout, in between time of my creative day being a full time artist and illustrator I spend time seated at my table when painting and drawing so I had to find a way to stay active and I am doing well about managing life stress I love meditation it works great for me! >3

  11. Wow…so the poor lady is stressed beyond belief but “she’s losing weight” so everything must be fine. That’s crazy talk. No wonder we’re all so messed up when it comes to eating and “dieting” and food in general

      1. That’s exactly what it sounds like!

My favorite bit is how she starts with saying β€œshe looks great” and then follows that up with β€œshe looks weird.”

  12. Weight loss ideas are such great conversation starters. I guess it requires a dedicated mind to ensure regimented eating and an exercise plan. Isn’t it so, Orla?

  13. Really enjoyed reading this made me chuckle a little. Also, like you sad, it does sound a little sad at the same time. From my younger days, I know how stressful exams can be, for me was the other way round I just could eat and eat.
